A countdown has nobody in it
It does have one, and it is free, and you don't use it. What is missing from a countdown is any reason to come back to it tomorrow. Here there is a capybara in the room with you — six of them, each drawn by hand with its own idle animation and its own opinions — and the session is the time you spend together rather than a number going down.

Nothing here dies when you quit
Nothing in this app dies, wilts or is taken back. Bail out eighteen minutes into a pomodoro and those eighteen minutes still pay their yuzu; you lose the two-yuzu completion bonus and that is the entire penalty. Close the tab mid-session and the minutes are still banked. There is no shaming screen, because a focus app that punishes you is one you stop opening.

Nothing in the shop can be bought with money
Everything in the Yuzu Stand is bought with focus and nothing in it can be bought with money — not now, not in a sale, not as a starter pack. Six capybaras, seven scenes and four props cost 545 yuzu between them. A finished 25-minute pomodoro pays 7. That is 78 sessions, about 33 hours of real focus, to own the lot.

what $89 is actually buying
Eighty-nine dollars is a lot for a timer, and it should be itemised rather than implied. Here is the whole of it, drawn rather than described.
Six capybaras, and they are not palette swaps
Two are yours from the first session; the number under each of the others is what it costs in yuzu. Moka soaks in the onsen. Pip sleeps in a nightcap. Zuzu rocks on a skateboard. Sensei chews a leaf on a cushion. Poly is rendered in flat facets like a very old graphics card. Bean is a baby peering out of half a yuzu. Each is a separate hand-drawn build with its own animation and its own lines, and the last two cost the most on purpose.

Seven scenes, two of them painted
Onsen, riverbank, meadow, rain on the window, night campfire — drawn, and moving: steam drifts, water shimmers, rain falls. Then Lantern Room and Rain Study, which are painted rooms with real depth to them and the flat capybara staged on top — the lantern flickers, the window light breathes, rain runs down the glass. Your companion changes seat inside the scene every so often, and after every gift. Three of the seven:

Sound with nothing to download
Rain, river, fire and birds, mixed on four sliders with a master volume. None of it is a recording — it is synthesized in the browser as you listen, so there are no audio files, no streaming and no loop you start recognising after a week. It is off by default.
The economy, with the arithmetic shown
One yuzu per five minutes of recorded focus, plus two for finishing a pomodoro. Everything in the Yuzu Stand costs 545 between them. There is no way to buy yuzu, no ads, no second currency, and no item that is ever withheld from you for money — the price on the door is the whole price.
A timer that can be interrupted
25 and 5 by default, or set your own, with a longer break every fourth round; count-up mode if you would rather not have a deadline; space bar starts and pauses. Wander off to the Yuzu Stand mid-session and the minutes you did are still written down — that was a real bug once and it is now a rule with a test on it.
And then never again
Today, this week, your streak and your longest one, and what the hours went on by tag — that is all the analytics there is. Your sessions are a database on your device, it works with the wifi off, and the 33 hours of focus it took you to earn Bean stay earned. No renewal, no expiry, no season, no reset.
The same streak on the laptop and the phone, if you want it
Sync is off until you switch it on in Settings. Switch it on and the sessions, the streak and the capybaras you unlocked are on both machines — a copy goes to your own account over HTTPS as plain JSON, and it is not end-to-end encrypted, which is spelled out in full further down this page before you are asked to decide anything.
what it will not do
Above the price rather than below it, because these are the reasons someone should not buy this.
It cannot stop you opening anything
No site blocking, no app blocking, no strict mode, no way to lock you out of the thing you are avoiding. If what you want is a bouncer, this is the wrong purchase — this is a companion, and walking away from it costs you nothing at all, by design.
It is not where your work lives
There is no task list, no projects, no calendar and no integration with the tool that has them. A session takes an optional one-line tag so you can see later what the hours went on, and that is the whole of it.
It will not chase you
No push notifications, no “you haven't focused today”, no email. If you don't open it, nothing happens. Your streak is a number you can look at, not a thing anybody defends.
Browser only, this release
It runs in a modern browser and installs to your home screen from there, offline included. Nothing else is included in the purchase, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.
It checks in with us every fortnight
Every screen works with the wifi off. The one thing that needs a network is the licence: the app confirms it with our server and then runs offline for 14 days between checks. Stay offline longer and it asks you to reconnect once, owners included. Nothing is deleted when that happens, and the full JSON export needs no account and no connection.
where your hours go
Your sessions live in a database on your device. Switch on sync in Settings and a copy goes to your own account over HTTPS as plain JSON — it is not end-to-end encrypted, so we could read it if we looked. Leave sync off and it stays on the device. The only other thing that reaches us is the licence keep-alive, which carries no session content at all.
